Our transportation system includes superb rail service, with access to both principal Class 1 railroads operating in the eastern United States: Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) and the CSX System. Having a choice of rail service provides effective rate competition that is difficult to find in rural areas. Our interstate-quality highways easily access three metro areas with a combined population of 22 million. Two private airports are located within the county, and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport, less than an hour commute, is a key regional asset that connects businesses to national and international markets.
Outstanding utilities provide both affordable and reliable service. For example, electric service rates in northeastern Pennsylvania cost up to 56% less than other areas in the northeastern United States. And a survey of 114 Wayne County businesses revealed that 94.6% rated those same services as good or excellent. Our list of providers is long, but WEDCO is here to be your point of contact, facilitating your business expansion plans..

Highway
Major highways: Interstate 84, U.S. Route 6, PA Route 191
Interstate 84 runs along the southern portion of the County allowing goods and services to move east to New York State and Connecticut and west to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Fifteen minutes travel from Exit 17 to the junction of I-81, 380 and 84 provides access to the entire north/south corridor from Philadelphia to Canada. Scenic U.S. Route 6 transverses the County from east to west, connecting to the new Gov. Robert P. Casey Highway, a 15-mile stretch of 4-lane highway that begins at the junction of I-81, 380, and 84. U.S. Route 191 is the major north/south arterial highway. Starting at Honesdale, travel Route 191 north for 30 miles to NYS Route 17, future I-86, or south for 25 miles to I-84.
Other critical highway routes from a functional standpoint include U.S. Routes 296, 370, 371, 507, 590.

Rail
The Stourbridge Railroad provides access to both principal Class 1 railroads operating in the Eastern United States: Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) and the CSX System.
The local railroad is a shortline operation known as the Stourbridge Railroad. Owned by the Lackawaxen-Honesdale Shippers Association, it directly interchanges at Lackawaxen, PA, with the Norfolk Southern Railway that now owns the mainline route between Binghamton and Port Jervis. The same line of railroad is, through trackage rights, also run regularly by the New York Susquehanna and Western Railway, a subsidiary of CSX. Therefore rail users have their choice of shipping via NS or CSX. This provides for effective rate competition, which is difficult to find anywhere in the country, but particularly in rural areas.
Freight service and switching are provided on as as-needed basis, up to five days a week plus emergency shipping at any time. The Lackawaxen-Honesdale Shippers Association owns approximately 50 railroad box cars which are held on-line as a “rolling warehouse” for storage for incoming products when needed.
The Stourbridge Railroad is also used by the Wayne County Chamber of Commerce for passenger excursions, an important component of the local tourist economy. These services are carefully coordinated with freight deliveries to ensure the latter always enjoys preference.
Palmyra Business Park is an 18.6-acre KOEZ industrial site with 1100’ of rail frontage along the Stourbridge Railroad in White Mills, PA. Owned by the Lackawaxen-Honesdale Shippers Association, this property is virtually tax-free until 2013.
